The Pure Nostalgia Drawings 1976
"An attempt through drawings to capture the art
of my youth. My teacher at the Slade School was Keith Vaughan, a painter
working in the style of the late "Figures in Landscape" paintings of
Paul Cezanne. I worked in my youth for many years in the style of Keith
Vaughan, before moving into more contemporary styles. In 1976 I decided to
take stock of my situation and the mood of my youth was first re-created in a
set of gouache paintings, and then in nine pencil drawings. Each drawing
developed from a single figure which almost completely dictated the way it would
look. It was with great interest that I viewed each finished
drawing." as quoted in 11 British Artists
catalogue, Minnesota, USA
